This area is one of the best places for bird watching in Japan.

@
No-where in Japan is there such a range of bird habitats - forests, grasslands, wetlands, cliffs ,lakes and rivers- and all within a few miles. So far we've counted 300 species. We can observe some of the world's precious birds, for example Red-crowned Crane (Grus japonensis), Steller`s Sea Eagle (Haliaeetus pelagicus), Blakiston's Fish Owl
(Ketupa blakistoni).
This area is the important habitats for waterfowls. Kiritappu-Shitsugen is a Ramsar sites (wetland reserve for waterfowls) .Lake Furen and Shunkunitai, and Notsuke Peninsula are registered as Ramsar sites for 2005.
Many varieties of birds, residents, summer visitors, transients, winter visitors, are attracted this area by the changing season and the diverse enviroment.

Poroto Guide Lodge runs a series of bird watching tours and Nature tours of the Kiritappu, and also goes across to Kushiro-shitsugen,Nemuro and Notsuke Peninsula.

Many habitats for both breeding and migrating birds remain in the forests and wetlands of Kiritappu.
Therefore, many different species can be seen.

Lake Furen

Lake Furen 96 km in circumference is a blackish-water lake mixed with seawater. Surrounded by varied scenery consisting of a large wetland, forests and sand hills, it is a paradise of 300 kinds of wild birds. Whooper swans come flying in early October, making Furen a true gswan lake.h
